- The Iguanodon was one of the first
- dinosaurs discovered -- the first
- fossils were found in England in
- 1822. Iguanodon fossils are common
- in Europe. The name means "Iguana
- Tooth" -- the jaws are lined with
- broad, flat teeth that are similar
- to those of an unrelated, presently
- living iguana lizard.
- The hind feet of the Iguanodon had
- four toes, one of which appears to
- have been vestigial. Tracks indicate
- that the Iguanodon was a herd
- animal.
- The Iguanodon had five-fingered
- hands with a spiked thumb.
- Originally the thumb was thought to
- be a horn and was placed on the
- head.
- The Iguanodon lived about 100
- million years ago, grew to a length
- of thirty feet, stood fifteen feet
- tall, and weighed in excess of
- 13,000 pounds.^
